An experience that will engage the senses as you explore the charming streetscape, striking historic architecture, and eclectic shops and eateries of Historic Downtown Cambridge.

Stroll Wheeling Avenue from 6th to 11th Streets to learn about the Victorian era by reading the plaques at the base of each of the 80 Dickens scenes.

All Dickens all the time!

Visit with volunteers in costume as they share stories and photos of how the Dickens display was created. Purchase Dickens and holiday souvenirs as you go behind the scenes to learn how it took a village to create this magnificent 10-week community event. Stop in for your walking tour brochure, commemorative merchandise, original artwork, and event information. Experience the Imagination Station and have your photo taken in period costume to take home to remember.

Full tea is served in Mrs. Cratchit's Kitchen on select Saturdays.

While at the Dickens Welcome Center, take your chance at winning one of two opportunities to have a Dickens mannequin designed to look like you! Raffle tickets may be purchased at the Center for $1 each or six for $5. Artist Martha Jamail will do the honor of sculpting the new faces for the 2012 season. All proceeds from the raffle benefit the Dickens Victorian Village project. The winning raffle tickets will be drawn in January 2012.

And don't forget your commemorative tote bag, which you can purchase for $5, featuring a picture of the beautiful Guernsey County Courthouse light show! Proceeds help support the light show.

VivaVintage Window Display

In partnership with An Enchanted Garden and the Eastern Ohio Art Guild Gallery & Learning Center, the windows at 756 Wheeling Ave will be decked out for the fall and winter holidays with vintage hat and clothing displays. Ever wondered about what your great-grandmother might have worn while she was strolling downtown? Stroll by this window display to take a look.

 

Victorian Views
Through the Eyes of Youth

The public is invited to gather for the unveiling of artistic panels created by art students from local schools. The art panels are displayed in old window openings of this historic building to give a "Victorian View" back in time. Cambridge Middle School art teacher Lori Taylor facilitated this project with four area school districts. Hot chocolate and cookies will be served at the unveiling.

On the 600 Block of Wheeling Avenue, Cambridge, Ohio

Rotary Square is a small but life-sized Victorian village modeled after shops from Charles Dickens' stories.

During Peddler Weekends, this arts and crafts village, located on the 600 block of Wheeling Ave., will feature heritage artisans dressed in period clothing selling their wares, including glass ornaments, holiday treats, and Picture Perfect by Darla -- an old fashioned photo studio where you can have your picture taken in Victorian wear to memorialize your visit!

Also during Peddler Weekends, nonprofit groups will be peddling yummy treats on Wheeling Avenue, adding a lively atmosphere to the Dickens Victorian Village display and offering a great time for the entire family to enjoy downtown.

For example, a local school booster club will be selling soup, baked potatoes, shredded chicken sandwiches, hot dogs, nachos and cheese, and hot and cold drinks at their concession stand near the County Administration Building at 627 Wheeling Avenue. Watch for other vendors throughout downtown.

Small and large group carriage rides through town will also be offered during Peddler Weekends. Carriage rides begin on Turner Avenue at 7th Street, behind Lillienthal Southeastern Printing.

Don't forget your camera! Photo opportunities abound, and you can also capture your smiling face in a Victorian character cutout as a memento of your Dickens experience!

 

Friendship VII Chorus Annual Show

Enjoy this presentation of women's barbershop-style music! The first half of the show will be skits with music, and the second half will be concert style.

Enjoy Christmas movies and crafts as you spend some time with us during our Open House. In addition to cookie decorating, various stations will feature ornament making, dress-up, story telling, and more. Food will be available for purchase.

for special holiday presentations at the museum

The National Museum of Cambridge Glass will be open for special winter hours in celebration of the Dickens Victorian Village holiday season.

The museum features 6,000 pieces of glassware made by the Cambridge Glass Company, with an interpretive area demonstrating how glass was made from gathering, shaping, etching, and engraving.

The museum will be decorated for the season and feature a Christmas tree decorated with Cambridge Glass. If you are looking for a special gift made in Cambridge, Ohio, USA, visit the museum gift shop where you will find a variety of jewelry and Christmas decorations made from Cambridge Glass, as well as beautiful handmade pieces of original Cambridge Glass.

The Sample Room features the door and shelving from the original factory, and a dining room display features glass table settings arranged on period furniture much as it would have appeared in the early 1900s.

Guests can do their own rubbings from original etching plates in the Education Center, and view a movie made in the 1940s by the Cambridge Glass Company.

Great Expectations Chocolate Walk

Be one of the lucky ticket holders to participate in the Great Expectations Chocolate Walk! Exchange your ticket for a Dickens Victorian Village bag and a walking tour brochure that will direct you to downtown participating merchants, where you will receive one chocolate experience at each location -- perhaps it will be a serving of hot chocolate, or a brownie, or a chocolate cordial. Enjoy some on the walk, or place some in your souvenir bag to enjoy later.

Only 350 tickets will be sold! Choose your start time of 5 p.m. or 6:30 p.m.

Guernsey County Courthouse
Holiday Music & Light Show

The courthouse comes alive nightly with thousands of pulsating lights synchronized to holiday music.

This magnificent 1881 building jumps into the 21st Century as it is bathed in colored lights, 36 animated light displays, and 15,000 lights outlining the building. The display is computer controlled with 364 electrical circuits meticulously synchronized to a holiday soundtrack, with a total of 30,000 lights.

Four different light shows, each 8 to 12 minutes in length, are performed throughout each evening beginning at 5:30 p.m., with the last show starting at 9 p.m.

The 2011 show features a children's set with holiday favorites like Frosty the Snowman including one song sung by Cambridge area 5th graders; contemporary recordings featuring local saxaphonist Gordon Hough; and a popular Christmas music selection.

Hot chocolate will be available at the peddler's shop on the courthouse square during the light show, where visitors are also invited to consider offering a donation to help support this community project.

Visitors are advised to please park their cars at appropriate parking lots and spaces in downtown and watch the show from the Courthouse lawn so as not to cause a traffic hazard with stopped cars in the streets. For those wishing to hear the light show music from your parked car, tune in to 102.7 FM.

Bring your friends and sample the fine pubs in downtown Cambridge all in one night -- a good old-fashioned pub crawl! A ticket gets you one specialty drink at each pub along with festive food and a Santa hat for the occasion! Only 125 tickets will be sold.

To begin your evening, check in from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Dickens Welcome Center, 643 Wheeling Ave. There, your ID will be checked and you can pick up your drink tickets, Santa hat, and wristband. Let the crawl begin! Each stop will feature their own drink and food specialty. Cornhole and other games will be available at the Francis Family Restaurant Ballroom.

Geocaching With Dickens

Saturday, Nov. 12 – 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Starting point at U.S. Bank patio, 819 Wheeling Ave. (across from the Courthouse), Cambridge, Ohio

Come and admire the beauty of downtown and the Dickens Victorian Village displays, celebrate the season, and swap cache talk with new and old friends, and find approximately 70 temporary caches along the way.

All cache spots are wheelchair and stroller accessible. The walk is about one mile total on flat sidewalks. Courthouse light shows start at 5:30 p.m., so come early to allow time to grab a bite to eat, walk the cache route, and enjoy the light show, too.

Complimentary coffee, hot chocolate, and cookies will be provide for geocachers at the U.S. Bank patio. Bring your family and friends for a nice evening out and share some cheer!

Come on out for an unforgettable evening of dance and merriment from the era of Dickens! This festive ballroom dance features you in your finest and entertainment by the Cambridge Social Dance Club.

And, with the help of the Ghost of Christmas Past, Scrooge himself just might appear!

The evening will include dinner, a festive intermission spread, dancing (including traditional dance instruction, if you'd like), and a few performances of vintage dance that would even make Scrooge give a cheer!

So brush off your coat-tails and come in your festive attire for an evening of fun and celebration. Victorian dress is optional. Proceeds benefit the Dickens Victorian Village Project.

The famous detective Sherlock Holmes, accompanied by his indispensable side-kick, Dr. Watson, will be joining a shady cast of characters to solve The Case of the Unraveling Strand.

Holmes has returned to Cambridge to play the part of Scrooge in one of his favorite plays, Dickens' masterpiece, "A Christmas Carol." Watson has come to town to see his friend take the stage. Of course, with their history, neither is overly surprised when a member of the cast turns up dead — murdered!

Join Holmes, Watson and Cambridge Chief of Police Dick Wayt as they work together to discover Who Done It!

Was it the innocent college student? The jealous lover? The catty cougar? The sneaky theater manager? The scorned beau? Make up your own mind, and maybe you'll catch a glimpse of the mysterious Dark Ghost or the lovely, tragic Singing Lady.

We'll see you at The Strand!


Written by local playwright Anne Chlovechok, this original spin on two favorite tales is performed by local actors in the historic Cambridge Performing Arts Centre (previously The Strand Theater) in downtown Cambridge.

Steeple Walk

Historic churches located in and around downtown Cambridge will open their doors to showcase their beautiful architecture and special programs. The event is sponsored by Cambridge Main Street and each of the participating churches as a gift to the community.

The walk begins at 12:30 p.m. at St. Benedict Catholic Church and is followed by a visit to seven additional churches each half hour! Visitors to all eight churches are eligible for a prize drawing at the end of the tour.

“A Coal Miner's Christmas” train ride

A Coal Miner's Christmas: Learn how coal miners and their families celebrated the holiday season through a dramatic presentation performed while riding a vintage train in the Appalachian foothills. This experience is one of Guernsey County's greatest treasures! Refreshments served for donation.

A dramatic presentation of the life of a coal miner is presented on "A Coal Miner's Christmas" ride aboard the Byesville Scenic Railway. The ride also features a sing-along of holiday songs and refreshments.

Step back in time and experience a little history as you enjoy an elegant tea and tour of the Colonel Taylor Inn, an elaborate and well-preserved Victorian mansion filled built in 1878 with authentic furniture and wares from the period.

See the Christmas tree elegantly decorated in the grand foyer, and all decorations in their finery, including the stockings hung by the chimney with care. A pianist and carolers perform Christmas music by the crackling fireplace as you settle into the comfortable sofas and armchairs, or wander through the Inn's 9,000 square feet of living space on three floors, including spacious and inviting parlors, formal dining room and more.

This is the only day the Inn is open for public tours!

Tea includes heaping trays of cookies, tea sandwiches, fruit, cheeses, nuts, homemade fudge, fresh baked pastries and tea, coffee, and punch.

Tour guides dressed in costume will give a history tour throughout all three floors decorated for the holidays. Children can have their picture taken with Santa.

Gifts will be raffled off at the end of the afternoon affair.


This event is a fundraiser for Haven Of Hope, which supports battered women, children and men.

Solve the mystery of Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Unraveling Strand, written by local playwright Anne Chlovechok.

Holmes and Watson have been invited back to Cambridge, Ohio, for performance at the Strand Theater. Sherlock is reluctant to travel until he hears that the theater is haunted and that piques his interest. They accept the invitation. During the performance, the audience gets more than they bargained for when they witness murder most foul!

Join Holmes and Watson as they uncover the truth in The Case of the Unraveling Strand.

Join Homes, Watson, and Cambridge Chief of Police Dick Wayt as they work together to discover who done it! Was it the innocent college student? The jealous lover? The catty cougar? The Dickens Victorian Village committee will be selling items in front of the Dickens Welcome Center, 643 Wheeling Avenue. All proceeds benefit the nonprofit Dickens Victorian Village of Cambridge, Inc.

Stroll along the Dickens Victorian Village displays, watch the Guernsey County Courthouse Holiday Music & Light Show, and, take an exclusive tour of the inside of the courthouse to learn about its history and architecture. Stories will be told throughout this engaging walk -- maybe even a ghost story or two!

An Original Interactive Mystery Experience

Throughout Downtown Cambridge, beginning at the Dickens Welcome Center and ending at the Cambridge Performing Arts Centre

"Slay Ride Six: Santa's Last Christmas," an all-new original comedic mystery, is interactive entertainment that you try to solve yourself! In this fun and creative story, Santa is planning to retire. So who will replace him? His chief elf? Easter Bunny? Tooth Fairy? Mother Nature? And who wants the job badly enough to kill for it? Come to Cambridge and wander the picturesque streets of historic downtown Cambridge in search of clues. Compete for prizes as you attempt to solve the mystery.

Noon to 2 p.m. Check In and Receive Your Sleuthing Bag
Join your fellow “partners in crime” at the Dickens Welcome Center and Ye Ole Curiosity Shoppe to register and pick up your “Sleuthing Bag” that even Sherlock Holmes would covet, filled with gifts from the area and $20 Mystery Money to spend while you are here.

2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Search For Clues
Spend the afternoon sleuthing through the streets and Dickens characters in downtown Cambridge to search for clues. The Dickens scenes are stationed along Wheeling Avenue at each antique lamppost and bench between 6th and 11th Streets.

2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Shopping and Afternoon Activities
Enjoy spending your Mystery Money at the eclectic shops and eateries in downtown Cambridge or take your time strolling amidst the Dickens scenes which feature plaques with interesting and educational facts about Victorian society. You are welcome to visit the exhibition any time of the day. You can use the map found in the Dickens Visitor’s Guide as a guide. This would also be a great opportunity to check into your overnight accommodations and freshen up before our dinner.

6:30 p.m. The Mystery is Solved!
Be sure to bring your answer sheet for awards as you join your fellow sleuths for an evening of fun, food and crime at St. Benedict’s Social Hall as Mystery Theatre Unlimited presents Slay Ride Six: Santa's Last Christmas. Turn in your clue/answer sheet before dinner and see how you fared after you eat. Have you chosen well? Once the mystery is solved, the winners will be announced, and grand prizes awarded.
